The West Yorkshire History Centre is the Wakefield base of the West Yorkshire Archive Service, housed in a modern city-centre building. Its collections hold records of the old West Riding of Yorkshire and the Wakefield district, reaching back to the twelfth century. Visitors can see a free exhibition of items drawn from the archive, which suits older children and teenagers interested in local history and in how documents from the past are kept. Original documents are consulted in a search room by appointment rather than on a drop-in basis, so families with younger children may find the exhibition the more suitable part of a visit. The centre has public lockers, coffee and tea for a small donation, and an accessible toilet in the main exhibition area. There is no café on site, but cafés and shops are within walking distance.
