Salts Mill is a converted Victorian textile mill on the edge of the Saltaire World Heritage village near Bradford. Admission to its galleries is free, and the building is set up as a gallery, shopping and eating destination rather than a play venue. The largest room is the 1853 Gallery, which shows a substantial collection of David Hockney paintings, etchings and drawings, and there is a separate third-floor gallery for changing exhibitions. A People and Process exhibition explains the history of the mill and village, which can suit older children interested in industry and local history. The bookshop is known for its children's section, and a casual café and a larger restaurant are on site. Parking for visitors is free. Families with younger children will find it a calm, indoor option for a wet day, with the wider village available to walk around outside.
Extra opening days and early closing over Christmas and school holidays are published on the venue site; check before visiting.
