Pontefract Castle is a ruined medieval stronghold on a hill above the town, run by Wakefield Museums and Castles. Entry to the grounds is free and no booking is needed. A visitor centre with a gift shop sits inside the site, alongside a cafe that offers kids' options. An outdoor castle playground with battering-ram swings, slides and climbing frames is open every day. Families can borrow multi-sensory explorer backpacks from the gift shop to explore the ruins hands-on. Free drop-in craft sessions run on Sundays, and bookable tours and a dungeon tour are available for a fee, with the dungeon suited to older children. Most of the site is reached on level paths, though the keep mound has steps. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds and the cafe.
