Cobham Hall is a large historic house in north Kent, rebuilt in the Elizabethan era and set in a 150-acre estate of gardens and parkland. It is also a working independent school, so the house is only open to visitors on a limited number of days each year, usually Sundays in the summer and autumn. Visits are guided tours led by a local historian, which take in the principal rooms and the story of the families who lived there, from Roman origins onward. Children are admitted free, which makes it a calm afternoon for older children with an interest in history, architecture and heraldry. The grounds are the main draw for younger visitors who want space to walk. Booking is not needed on open days, and the house is best suited to families who enjoy heritage visits rather than hands-on attractions.
