Duncarron is a fortified village rebuilt in wood in the Carron Valley, a short drive from Stirling, and it is run by the Clanranald Trust with help from volunteers. Visitors walk a path through woodland to reach the village, where the timber halls, round houses, gatehouse and workshops show how people lived in medieval Scotland. Families can explore at their own pace on self-guided tours, and there are costumed interpreters and themed event weekends through the year, which suit children who enjoy history, dressing-up spectacle and hands-on activity. Dogs on leads are welcome. The site is set in an outdoor forest setting, so sensible footwear and a flexible plan for wet weather are worth having, as the paths can be uneven after rain. Guided tours for groups are arranged by email rather than being a set daily timetable.
Hours and tours change with the season and event calendar; check the venue's site before visiting.
