The Baird Institute is a museum and gallery in the centre of Cumnock, East Ayrshire, housed in a striking pink sandstone building opened in 1891. Its displays cover the town's industrial heritage, including mining and textiles, and include an important collection of Mauchline ware and examples of Cumnock pottery. A room is dedicated to James Keir Hardie, the Labour Party founder, and shows some of his personal belongings. The venue also runs a changing programme of contemporary and traditional art exhibitions, with workshops and heritage events through the year. It suits families on a wet afternoon, older children curious about local history, and school groups, which are welcome by appointment. Admission is free and the building is small enough to explore in about an hour.
