The Dick Institute is a Victorian-era cultural building in Kilmarnock that combines a museum, a contemporary art gallery and East Ayrshire's central library under one roof. Families can explore the North Museum, which has natural history and archaeology displays including a dinosaur, a whale jawbone and a fossil scorpion, and the South Museum and Loom Room, which tell the story of the town's industries and social history. The Young People's Gallery shows work by local young people, and the ground-floor children's library and regular Bookbug sessions give younger visitors something to do as well. Major touring exhibitions appear here several times a year, often with a family-friendly theme. A tearoom serves coffee and cakes, so a visit can be a relaxed half-day in the town centre.
