Hunterston Castle is a medieval pele tower on the Hunterston estate and the ancestral home of Clan Hunter, with rooms arranged to show how people lived in the building centuries ago. Visits are guided and must be booked in advance, so a guide can take children through the hall, the family bedroom and the parapet where defenders once stood. The grounds are pleasant for a walk, and the castle can also be seen from a public path outside the visiting season. Children aged 10 and under go free, and school parties are welcomed on tours of a limited size. The building is historic, so some areas are not reachable by wheelchair users or people with limited mobility, and families with buggies should check ahead. It suits families with older children who enjoy history, castles and a guided story.
Tours run March to September only.
