A compact museum in the old town centre of Mauchline, East Ayrshire, set in the cottage where Robert Burns and his wife Jean Armour once lodged. Rooms are furnished to show how the poet lived in the late 1780s, and there are original manuscripts, letters and personal objects to look at. Families can also see the local craft traditions of the town, with a large collection of decorative Mauchline Ware boxes and granite curling stones made locally. Across the road is Nanse Tinnocks, a former alehouse that Burns knew, which now holds more of the town's history. Exhibitions change through the year, and the museum runs events such as the annual Burns Birthday celebration. It is a short visit rather than a full day out, best suited to older children and anyone interested in Scottish literature and local history, and it works well combined with a walk around the old streets.
