Crossraguel Abbey is a large medieval monastery ruin in open farmland just off the A77 south-west of Maybole, looked after by Historic Environment Scotland. Much of the abbey is still standing, so families can wander the cloisters, the monks' church and the chapter house, and climb the gatehouse for views over the site. The stone dovecot and the small cells beyond the cloister give younger visitors something concrete to picture, and staff on site are happy to talk through the history of the Cluniac monks and the fighting that damaged the abbey in the Wars of Independence. The grass and gravel paths are wide, with space to run about and have a picnic, though some areas are fenced off during conservation work and the gatehouse stair is steep with no handrail. It suits a relaxed half-day out, particularly for children who enjoy old buildings and open ground.
Seasonal opening: April to September only, Thursday to Sunday.
