Blue Town Heritage Centre is a volunteer-run accredited museum and heritage centre in the historic Blue Town district of Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. Housed in a building with roots back to 1868 (formerly the New Inn, then The Criterion public house and its Palace of Varieties music hall), the centre is packed with displays telling the story of this distinctive working-class community and its Royal Navy dockyard heritage. Exhibits cover the maritime history of Blue Town, a representation of Nelson's cabin, a full-size cannon, and the birth of the Co-operative movement by dockyard workers, including how rich and poor children lived in Blue Town. Admission is free with donations welcome. The centre also features the lovingly restored Criterion Music Hall, a vintage tea room serving cream teas, and operates as a community cinema and theatre with shows and family events throughout the year. Open Tuesday to Friday 10am-3pm and Saturday 10am-1pm, longer for events.
Open year-round.
