Maidstone Museum holds over 600,000 items of international importance across collections dedicated to archaeology, costumes, ancient Egypt, ethnography, biology, fine art, geology, local history, and Japanese decorative arts and prints. The museum is housed in Chillington Manor, an Elizabethan mansion in Maidstone town centre. Within the main building is the Bentlif Art Gallery, featuring watercolour and oil paintings, and the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regimental Museum documenting the history of the local regiment. Separately, the Maidstone Carriage Museum holds more than 60 road carriages in the former stables of the Archbishop's Palace, including Queen Victoria's State Landau, antique sedan chairs, and Victorian 'growlers'. The museum runs temporary exhibitions, hands-on workshops for children, tours, talks, and Museum Late events.
