Explore the dark underground world of a lead miner in Victorian Upper Weardale. From the moment you put on your hard hat, lamps and wellies, your visit becomes an unforgettable adventure. Experience life above ground working as a washer boy, see what minerals you might find, and take in the beauty of Spar boxes. Embark on an underground mine trip (don't forget your knee-length wellies), explore exhibitions featuring the Weardale Tub, and search for lead ore and minerals on the washing floor. The site features the impressive 10-metre Killhope Wheel waterwheel, restored to working order, plus historic buildings and machinery. Enjoy the woodland walks, play park, bird watching and squirrel spotting. Visit the gift shop and relax in the 1853 cafe. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the ample outdoor seating. The museum won the inaugural Guardian Family-Friendly Museum Award in 2004 and the North East's Small Visitor Attraction of the Year in 2008. Admission is FREE of charge.
