Set on the fringe of the town named after it, Barnard Castle is a 12th-century stone fortress begun by Bernard de Balliol. Highlights include the mighty round tower, a window carved with Richard III's white boar emblem, and sweeping views over the winding River Tees. With a huge outer ward and inner stronghold towering above the gorge, there's lots to see and plenty of room to explore and play. The castle is managed by English Heritage and has been awarded a Bronze Green Impact Award.
