Hartlepool's Maritime Experience (part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy) is an award-winning family attraction recreating an 18th-century seaport. The centrepiece is HMS Trincomalee, Britain's oldest floating warship built in 1817, which you can explore with an audio guide. Around the historic quayside, period shops and houses bring history to life with costumed guides, hands-on activities and live demonstrations. Kids love the Children's Maritime Adventure Centre with its large wooden play-ship, pirate exhibits, and interactive displays. The attraction also features the Diving Deep exhibition, a cafe, and a gift shop. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm (open all week during Hartlepool school holidays).
Open all week during Hartlepool Borough Council school holidays. Winter: HMS Trincomalee open at set times only (11:30, 13:00, 15:00) and cafe hours seasonally adjusted - contact venue to confirm. Car park closes 5pm (summer) / 4pm (winter). HMS Trincomalee closed 1.30pm-4pm on 7 Aug 2026 and 11.30am-2pm on 21 Aug 2026.
