The Winding House is the museum for Caerphilly County Borough, set on the site of the former Elliot Colliery in the Rhymney Valley. The building was restored as a museum and its centrepiece is an original Victorian winding engine dating from 1891, which once lifted miners and coal between the surface and the workings below. Exhibition galleries cover local industrial, social and family history, and several displays are hands-on, which suits curious children and their grown-ups. The museum runs an events programme with activities during school holidays and welcomes school groups with learning sessions. A coffee shop and gift shop sit on site. Visits are usually short, with the engine and galleries taking an hour or two to explore. Families with an interest in mining heritage or local history will find the museum a useful stop in the valleys.
