War Horse Valley is a working family farm on the edge of Dartmoor that is linked to Michael Morpurgo's novel War Horse. The site is built around a centuries-old cob barn that houses a museum with several exhibitions on the First World War, the part horses played in it, and the history of the surrounding farmland. Younger children tend to head straight for the animals, which include ponies, alpacas, goats, pigs, sheep and poultry, many of them open to feeding and petting. A farm trail takes about half an hour on foot and there is a trailer ride around the land. Indoor games in the games shed suit older children, and a tea room serves Devonshire cream teas. It is a relaxed afternoon out rather than a large attraction, and the family-run feel is a big part of its appeal.
Seasonal: open weekends and school holidays from April to September only.
Questions parents ask
- Is it manageable with a toddler and an older child at once?
- Yes. Visitors report plenty to do for different ages: younger children can feed animals and play in the games shed, whilst older kids enjoy the tractor ride, which is described as educational and covers local history and farming.
- Is there somewhere to eat, or should we take a picnic?
- There is a tea room on site, so you can get refreshments without bringing your own food. The venue also welcomes dogs on a lead if you're bringing pets.
- What should we bring that people forget?
- Bring money for animal feeding and the tea room. Since the site combines animals, games and outdoor farm areas, comfortable clothes and footwear for both fields and the trailer ride are worth considering.
