John Webb's Windmill is a red-brick tower mill built in 1804, standing on a hill to the south-west of Thaxted church. It is the last surviving windmill in the town and is being restored by a volunteer-supported trust, with its sails, machinery and brickwork under repair. Families can walk the short route from the church through the almshouses and past the cottages to see the mill from the public viewing area, and watch the restoration progress. Interior tours were paused while conservation work is under way, so check the venue's own news page before travelling. The surrounding landscape is open and breezy, suiting a short walk, a picnic-friendly outing and a bit of local history for older children. Kids' activity pages are published on the mill's website.
