Copped Hall is a Palladian mansion on a ridge above its parkland near Epping, burnt in 1917 and now being slowly restored by a charitable trust. Visitors can join guided tours that take in the cellars, the vaulted kitchen and the grand stables, then walk the gardens, which include a large sunken rock garden, a four-acre walled kitchen garden and a long herbaceous border. The trust runs family-oriented days through the year, including an Easter egg hunt, a teddy bears picnic garden afternoon and a family apple day, and children under 18 go free on guided tours and open days. Because the site is only open for advertised events, families should check the events calendar before travelling. Older children interested in history or architecture tend to get the most from a tour.
