A museum that follows the story of the Medway area from prehistoric times to the present day, housed in a Grade 1 listed civic building dating from 1687. Families are drawn first to the reconstruction of a 19th-century prison hulk, which visitors can walk through across three levels, and to the Making of Mr Dickens gallery, which covers the author's childhood years in Medway. Other displays include a 200,000-year-old axe that can be handled, Roman domestic objects, a model of Rochester Castle under siege and a collection of 18th-century cabinet maker's tools. The Guildhall Chamber, with its ornate ceilings, is also worth a look. The building has many stairs and level changes, so visitors with mobility needs should check the access details before visiting. It suits school-age children and history-minded adults.
