Hever Castle & Gardens sits in the Kent countryside and was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Families can explore the castle's rooms, with their tapestries, antique furniture and Tudor paintings, then spend the rest of the day outdoors. The estate has a water maze and a yew maze to find a way through, a lake walk and boating, and a play area where children can let off steam. A miniature model house exhibition and a military museum add something different for older children. Seasonal events, from spring bulbs to a Christmas season, give reasons to return across the year. Pushchairs must be left in the courtyard when visiting the castle, so younger children may suit a gardens-only visit. The grounds are generous, so comfortable shoes and a plan for breaks are worth having.
