The Margate Caves are a man-made underground network, first dug as a chalk mine and later a Victorian seaside attraction, reopened in 2019 after a community campaign. Children can wander the narrow chalk tunnels and chambers, looking at old murals and graffiti on the walls, and there are exhibition spaces and finds from the site on display in the visitor centre. Stairs, a steep low tunnel and uneven floors mean it suits children who can manage some scrambling and stairs, and it is not reachable for wheelchair users. The visitor centre has a café, a gift shop and toilets, and there are workshops and school visits, a Father Christmas experience in winter and children's parties. Allow around three quarters of an hour for a visit. Opening days vary through the year, so check before travelling.
