The Shell Grotto is a small, mysterious underground passage in Margate whose walls and roof are covered in intricate mosaics made from shells such as whelks, mussels and oysters. Its origins are still unknown, which gives older children and grown-ups plenty to puzzle over as they wind through the winding tunnels to a rectangular chamber. A small museum room explains the story of its discovery and the many theories about why it was built. The visit is short and self-contained, so it suits a rainy afternoon or a break from the seafront. The site is a confined, dimly lit space with uneven floors and two flights of stairs, so it is best for children who can manage steps and enjoy quiet, close-up looking. There is a gift shop with shell-themed goods on site. Families with younger children should plan for a slow, careful visit.
