Cranbrook Union Mill is a working smock windmill on high ground near the centre of Cranbrook in the Weald of Kent. Built in 1814, it is a Grade I listed building and is described as England's tallest working smock mill. Visitors climb through several floors of machinery and displays to reach the top, where the views over the town are a highlight. Children can take part by hand-grinding flour, and models and exhibits explain how wind power turned the millstones. It suits families who enjoy history and hands-on activities on a visit that is short and easy to fit into a day in town. The mill is run by volunteers and opens only on selected summer afternoons, so check before travelling. The stairs are steep and narrow, so access is limited for pushchairs and wheelchair users, although a ground-floor exhibition space and a video tour offer a way to see the displays.
