The Friars is a Carmelite priory on the banks of the River Medway, with a religious house on the site since the 13th century, and it is a pilgrimage centre. For families the appeal is the open grounds: about 40 acres of woodland paths, formal gardens and pasture, including the Peace Garden, the Rosary Way and a duck pond where children are allowed to feed the ducks, swans and water hens. Duck feed can be bought at reception or the gift shop. Entry to the grounds is free, so it suits a low-cost walk or picnic outing. There is a tea room and a gift shop on site, and the medieval courtyard is worth a look. It suits families who want fresh air, a stroll and a bit of history rather than rides or play equipment.
