Thurne Windmill is a white-painted drainage windpump standing where Thurne Dyke meets the River Thurne in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Built in 1820 to pump water off the surrounding marshland, it was rescued from dereliction in the late 1940s and is now run by volunteers and a local owner. Visitors can look round the mill on scheduled open days during the summer, when the marsh-men and marsh-women demonstrate the daily work of the mill and its machinery. The venue has run occasional family activities, such as butter churning, with the children invited to take part. There is a small exhibition inside, and the riverside setting suits a relaxed walk, a picnic on the staithe or a boat trip along the dyke. Please check ahead before travelling, as the mill is currently undergoing an exterior repaint and some events have been postponed.
Set summer open days; currently paused for repainting work, with no reopening date published.
