Waxham Great Barn is one of the longest ancient barns in Norfolk, a late 16th-century thatched building that stands on the wild north-east coast near Sea Palling and Horsey. Families can walk around the barn, which holds an exhibition about local life and the history of the building, and the café in one of the restored single-storey wings serves snacks and light meals. The barn is a good stop for children interested in history and old buildings, and it pairs well with a walk to the nearby beach, which is known for its seal colonies. The site is cared for by the Norfolk historic buildings charity, so the visit also gives a sense of how old farm buildings are kept going. Check ahead before visiting, as the barn is closed on some days when it is hired for weddings or events.
