Facilities
We haven’t checked this venue’s facilities yet. Give them a ring if something specific matters for your visit.
The Maritime Heritage Centre sits in a converted former officers' mess beside a campsite at Stiffkey, run by the Rescue Wooden Boats charity. Its main story is that of Lucy Lavers, a wartime wooden lifeboat that took part in the Dunkirk evacuation and later served at Aldeburgh before being restored by the charity. Displays cover the crab and whelk fishing traditions of the North Norfolk coast and the boats and people that worked them, and a short film programme features the last generation of fishermen and lifeboat crews to use wooden boats. It is a compact, indoor visit that suits older children and families interested in history, boats and local heritage. The charity also runs heritage trips aboard the restored lifeboat from Wells-next-the-Sea, which can be booked separately. Visits are seasonal, so it is worth checking the calendar before travelling.
Seasonal: Easter to end of October only. Heritage tours aboard Lucy Lavers run from Wells-next-the-Sea from Easter to October, weather permitting, and are separate from the centre.
Questions parents ask
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The page does not state a typical visit length. Contact the venue for guidance on how long to spend exploring the displays and films at the Maritime Heritage Centre.
- Is the Maritime Heritage Centre suitable for young children, or is it better for older kids?
- The page does not specify which ages get the most out of the Centre. It focuses on learning about local boats and fishing heritage through displays and films, so it may suit older children better, but contact them to ask about younger visitors.
- What should we bring, or is there anywhere to eat?
- We have not confirmed whether there is a café or refreshment facilities. The page does not mention food provision, so you may want to contact the venue or bring a picnic.
