Two early 17th-century merchants' houses on the South Quay, restored and furnished to show how Great Yarmouth's narrow Rows looked in different periods. The Old Merchant's House is presented as it would have been in Victorian times, while the neighbouring Row 111 House is shown as it was in 1942, just before a wartime bomb hit it. Both are packed with fixtures rescued from demolished Row houses, including painted panels, wall anchors and door knockers, which give younger visitors plenty to spot and ask about. Nearby stand the ruins of a medieval friary, with traces of its cloister and early 14th-century wall paintings. Visits are guided tours on selected days, so families should check ahead. The upper floors are reached by steep, narrow stairs, so the houses suit children who can manage those, and pushchairs are allowed on the ground floor. It makes a compact, indoor-led stop for anyone curious about local history and seaside town life.
Questions parents ask
- Is it suitable for buggies and younger children?
- The Row Houses are buggy friendly, making them manageable for families with toddlers. The buildings are period properties with period decoration, so while accessible with a buggy, you may find navigation tighter in some rooms than others.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- A typical visit takes around 60 minutes, which gives you time to explore both Row 111 House and the Old Merchant's House and appreciate the collections of fixtures and fittings throughout.
- Is there anywhere to eat when we visit?
- We haven't confirmed whether there is a café at the Row Houses, so you may want to bring a packed lunch or plan to eat elsewhere in Great Yarmouth.
