Bishop Bonner's Cottages are the oldest surviving domestic building in Dereham, a row of three thatched, timber-framed cottages with low beams, sloping ceilings and twisting stairs to explore. The museum inside is run by Dereham Heritage Trust and has displays of local interest that are refreshed every year, alongside permanent exhibits on the town as an ancient market town and on its lost industries. Children can wander through the tiny rooms and look at the old tools, bygones and pargeting on the front of the building, which makes a short, gentle visit for a family with older children or anyone curious about how people lived in these cottages. The museum is small, so a visit fits easily into a morning in town, and it sits beside St Nicholas' Church. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. The upper floor involves narrow, steep stairs, so families with buggies or limited mobility should check access before they go.
