The Mountain Centre is the main information point for Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, set on the edge of Mynydd Illtud common with views towards Pen y Fan. Entry to the centre is free, and families can pick up maps, guides and advice on local walks before heading out. Inside there is an exhibition introducing the park's landscape, wildlife and geology, along with a short film and a large relief map that helps children work out which peaks they can see. Outside, a children's play area and an open grassy field give younger visitors room to run about, and several easy walks start from the grounds. The on-site café serves all-day food, and a craft and gift shop sells local work. The centre is also a popular stargazing spot, as the park is an International Dark Sky Reserve. It suits a relaxed family stop, whether as a starting point for a day out or a rest between walks.

Questions parents ask

Is there a café, and can we eat there with young children?
Yes, Dau Fynydd Café serves all-day breakfasts, lunches, teas, coffees and homemade cakes, with a dog-friendly area. There's a baby changing room in the main building for parents' convenience.
How long should we allow for a visit?
The page does not state a typical visit duration, but the centre has a children's play area, interactive exhibits about local wildlife, a gift shop, and access to surrounding trails, suggesting visitors can spend anywhere from an hour to a full afternoon depending on what they choose to do.
Will it work if the weather is bad?
The visitor centre has indoor facilities including interactive exhibits, a café, shop, and toilets, making it viable in wet weather. However, the children's play area appears to be outdoor, so that would not be usable in poor conditions.
Is the visit buggy-friendly?
We have not confirmed whether buggies are manageable throughout the centre. There is a ramped outdoor path to the café, but access details for the main building and play area are not stated on this page.
Which ages would get the most out of it?
The centre suits babies through teens, with a children's play area, interactive wildlife exhibits, books including children's titles, and the Terrain Rider mobility scooter for exploring nearby Mynydd Illtyd. Different ages can find activities suited to them.
