y Gaer brings a museum, art gallery and public library together under one roof in the Grade II* listed Shire Hall in the centre of Brecon. The museum holds archaeology, local history and art collections, with displays on the social and industrial history of the Brecknock area and a Victorian courtroom that families can explore. Exhibitions and events are aimed at visitors of all ages, and there is a cafe on site for a break between galleries. The building also houses education and community rooms. A visit suits a rainy afternoon or a town-centre stop, with the Brecon Beacons and other attractions within walking distance. Younger children may enjoy the local history displays and the building itself, while older children can look at the archaeology and treasures on show. Check the website before travelling, as opening times vary by day.
