Tocketts Watermill is a restored, water-powered corn mill in a wooded valley just outside Guisborough. Its four floors keep much of the original machinery, and the great wheel still turns when the mill is milling. Visitors go up through the building with a volunteer guide who explains how grain was ground into flour, and children can see the stones, gears and hoppers at close range. The mill still makes flour from locally grown wheat, which can be bought on the day, and there is a gingerbread recipe for those who want to try baking at home. The surrounding Tocketts Mill Country Park has woodland and streamside paths to walk after the tour. The mill has steep stairs, so it suits older children and adults more than very young toddlers who need carrying.
Summer and bank-holiday opening only; the mill is closed outside these dates.
