Castle Howard is a historic country house set in a large estate in the Howardian Hills, a short drive from York. Families can tour the grand house with its painted Great Hall and collections, then spend the rest of the day in the gardens, woodland and lakeside walks. The main draw for children is Skelf Island, a large adventure playground built around treetop nests, rope bridges, slides and climbing equipment, with a storyline of woodland creatures that appears during the school holidays. Seasonal family trails, events and Christmas displays run through the year. There are cafes and a shop on site, and the grounds are wide and open, so it suits a relaxed day with plenty of room to run around. It works well for school-age children and for families with younger ones who want a mix of history and outdoor play.
