Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns is an underground show cave on the moors between Pateley Bridge and Grassington, close to Harrogate. Visitors walk through lit limestone passages full of stalactites and stalagmites, with hand rails on the stairs and helmets provided. A UV experience later in the day lets people see the calcite glow under ultraviolet torches. Above ground there is an outdoor gem sluice where children can pan for crystals and fossils to take home, a fossil dig, geode cracking and crystal workshops. A resident Cavewoman guide leads family activities, there is a small cinema, and a cafe serves lunch and afternoon tea. The site also runs school visits with curriculum-linked activities and hosts children's parties, which suits a family day out in any season.
