The Silk Museum sits in an old art school building in Macclesfield and follows the town's long history as a silk centre, from the mills and looms through to the textile designs and vintage fashion on display. Galleries cover how the silk trade shaped the town and how its industry supported the Second World War effort, and there is a section on an Egyptian collection gathered by a local silk heiress. Temporary exhibitions change through the year. The museum runs seasonal family events, such as festive visits and film screenings. The building has a lift between its two floors, a cafe for a break, and a small gift shop. Visitors who want more can book a guided tour of the neighbouring Paradise Mill, where restored Jacquard looms are still demonstrated. It suits school-age children and older family visitors who enjoy history-led days out.
