Museum in the Park sits inside Stratford Park in Stroud and tells the story of the surrounding district, from dinosaur bones and local geology to historical paintings and the patent drawings for the world's first lawnmower. The main displays fill a historic wool merchant's house, and many rooms have interactives and toys, with some cabinets fitted with low peep holes that suit small children. A modern extension holds a temporary exhibition gallery, a gift shop and a small refreshments area. Outside, the walled garden has flower borders, an orchard, a dipping pond and a beehive, and the wider park has lawns, a lake and play areas for a family picnic. Entry is free, and the museum runs family activities and workshops alongside its exhibitions.
Questions parents ask
- Is there food at the museum, or should we bring a picnic?
- There is a mini café on site. The museum also has a walled garden where you could sit, though we haven't confirmed a dedicated picnic area.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- A typical visit lasts around 60 minutes, though you can spend as long as you like since admission is free and no ticket is required.
- Can I manage a buggy, or is it manageable with a toddler and an older child together?
- The museum has step-free access throughout. However, we haven't yet confirmed how buggy-friendly the layout is, so you may want to contact them before your visit.
- Will it work if the weather is bad?
- Yes—the museum is both indoors and outdoors, so there's plenty to see even on a rainy day. The indoor galleries, art gallery, and gift shop mean you're not dependent on good weather.
