The Eastgate Chamber is the underground section of Gloucester's ancient defences, and it is the best place in the city to see the remains of the Roman walls. Visits are guided tours of about an hour, and some dates feature a costumed Roman soldier character who explains how the city walls were built and what happened to them over the centuries. Tours meet in the reception of the Museum of Gloucester, and along the way families see the remains of the Roman walls, the base of a 13th century gate tower and a 16th century horsepool. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and the soldier-themed tour is not suitable for under-5s. The tours suit older children and families interested in history, though the stairs and small spaces mean the chamber is not easy for everyone to reach.
