The Monument is a tall stone column in the City of London, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire of 1666. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase of 311 steps to a viewing gallery at the top and look out over the city. It suits older children who enjoy climbing and history, and the climb is a good challenge for a family group. Younger children need to be able to manage the many steps, so it suits sturdy walkers rather than pushchairs. Under-fives are admitted free and children aged 5 to 15 pay a reduced child rate, though children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are sold on the day rather than in advance, and numbers inside are limited, so there can be a short wait to enter. The column is run by the City of London Corporation.
