Shakespeare's Globe is a reconstruction of the original Elizabethan playhouse for which Shakespeare wrote, set on the south bank of the River Thames in Southwark. Families can take a guided tour of the round timber theatre, see the thatched roof and stage, and learn how plays were staged four centuries ago. The venue runs family events during school holidays, including spooky tours, interactive shows and practical workshops aimed at children and their adults. Seasonal family productions, such as a musical adaptation of a well-known puppet story, are staged in the main theatre in winter. A smaller candlelit indoor playhouse hosts other performances. There is a bar and restaurant, a shop, and a riverside location close to Tate Modern and Borough Market, which makes it easy to combine a visit with a wider walk along the Thames.
Main season runs in summer; a winter programme of family workshops, storytellings, tours and a seasonal musical runs from late autumn into early spring. Check the what's-on page for dates.
