Epping Forest District Museum tells the story of the people and events that shaped the Epping Forest district of south-west Essex. It occupies three joined buildings on Sun Street, the oldest of them a Tudor house, and its collection ranges from a woolly mammoth tusk and Anglo-Saxon and medieval finds to costumes, toys, paintings and old photographs. Seven galleries take visitors from prehistory through to the modern day, and a Core Gallery shows a cabinet of curiosities with windows into the stores behind. Families can often dress up and hold their own tea party, and the museum runs events through the year with music and craft activities. A small garden and a gift shop round off a visit. The building has step-free access throughout and baby changing, so it suits a relaxed visit with younger children as well as older children interested in history.
