The Painted Hall sits inside the Old Royal Naval College on the Greenwich riverside, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its walls and ceilings were painted by Sir James Thornhill between 1707 and 1726 and cover more than 3,700 square metres with around 200 figures, including kings, queens and mythological creatures. Families can wander the hall at their own pace, join a short talk, or pick up a free activity booklet and sensory backpacks for younger visitors. Children are welcome and the grounds around the college are open for a walk, a picnic or a play on the lawns. Nearby, the visitor centre tells the story of Greenwich through hands-on displays. Visits suit children who enjoy history, art and big stories, and older children can take in the connection to Lord Nelson and the sea.
