Black Cultural Archives is a heritage centre and archive in Brixton, set up in 1981 to collect and share the histories of people of African and Caribbean descent in Britain. Its building on Windrush Square holds books, documents, audio-visual material and objects, along with gallery exhibitions and public events. Families are most likely to find it useful for school-age children, as the venue runs learning workshops for pupils from early years through to sixth form, which give young people a close look at real archive items. Reading room and library access is run by appointment, so it suits a planned visit rather than a casual drop-in. Nearby Brixton Road and Windrush Square make it easy to combine with a walk through the area's street life and food shops.
