Sutton House is a red-brick Tudor manor built in 1535 and now the oldest house in Hackney. Visitors can walk through its panelled rooms, painted staircase and carved fireplaces, and see later layers of its history, including a room recreated to show the years when squatters lived there. Next door, the Breaker's Yard is a playful urban garden on the site of a former car scrapyard, where a two-storey caravan sculpture stands among the plants. The house also runs exhibitions, workshops and community events. The place suits families interested in history and in east London's industrial past, and it is about five minutes' walk from Hackney Central station. The house is temporarily closed at present, so check the National Trust site before travelling.
