A 75-minute guided tour takes visitors down 180 steps into one of the eight deep-level air-raid shelters built under London in the Second World War. The shelter sits about eleven floors below the streets of south London and held thousands of people during air raids. Two guides lead the group through the tunnels, and one plays a 1940s warden who explains what the shelter was like to work and sleep in. Reconstructed spaces such as the warden's booth, a medical bay and a canteen help bring the story to life, and graffiti left by people who sheltered here is still visible on the walls. The tour suits older children and teenagers, who must be aged ten or over and must be accompanied by an adult if under 16. It involves a lot of walking in low light and is not step-free, so it suits families who are comfortable with confined spaces and stairs.
