Apsley House, at Hyde Park Corner in central London, was built in the 1770s by Robert Adam and later remodelled for the first Duke of Wellington. It is still the London residence of the Dukes of Wellington, and part of the house is open to visitors as a museum. Inside, families can walk through Regency rooms, including the Waterloo Gallery, and see paintings from the Spanish royal collection, porcelain, silver and memorabilia of the Duke's career. A colossal statue of Napoleon as Mars is among the sculptures on show. A multimedia guide is available, and the museum offers school visits and occasional guided tours, where children go free. It suits older children with an interest in history, art or the Napoleonic wars, and it is a short walk from Wellington Arch and Hyde Park.
