Benjamin Franklin House is a restored Georgian townhouse on Craven Street, close to Trafalgar Square and the Thames, where the American founding father lived between 1757 and 1775. Visitors move room by room through a self-guided tour with a printed guide, or book an architectural tour that covers the building's eighteenth-century features and its later history as an anatomy school. The house is mostly unfurnished so that it keeps to its original fabric, and some rooms use live performance and projection to bring Franklin's London years to life. Children are admitted free to the self-guided visit, and the house runs a free education programme with school visits, workshops and family days. Its grand Georgian rooms and the bones found under the floor make it a quieter, more curious outing for older children and history-minded families, and it suits a visit that pairs well with a walk along the river.
