The Royal Academy of Arts is a long-established London art gallery and charity in Burlington House on Piccadilly. Its main galleries host large temporary exhibitions of historic and contemporary art, and a free collection gallery and display rooms can be visited without a ticket. For families, the appeal is the combination of big-name art with practical help for young visitors: children under 16 go free to exhibitions, there are Art Detectives packs and at-home activities, and family workshops are run for children with SEND as well as for other families. Baby changing, high chairs and buggy access are available, and there are cafés and restaurants on site. It suits older children with an interest in drawing, painting and design, and younger ones who enjoy spotting colours and shapes in big rooms. Exhibition programmes change through the year, so check what is showing before planning a visit.
