Vestry House Museum sits in the old village centre of Walthamstow and tells the story of the Waltham Forest area. The Grade II listed building began life as a workhouse and later served as a police station and a private house before opening as a museum in 1931. Families tend to head for the reconstructed Victorian parlour, the police cell tableau and the Bremer car, one of the earliest British petrol-driven cars, which was built locally. The museum also has domestic life and costume galleries, a collection of toys and local manufacturers' products, and a garden reinterpreted from the workhouse grounds. It hosts themed exhibitions and family events. The museum is currently closed for a redevelopment project and is due to reopen in spring 2027, so check the website before planning a visit.
