The Mental Health Museum is on the Fieldhead Hospital site in Wakefield and follows the history of mental health care from the early 1800s to the present day. Its collection includes objects from the former West Riding asylums, such as restraint equipment, a padded cell, early medical instruments, photographs and documents, along with a scale model of the Stanley Royd Hospital where the museum began. Newer displays look at how people experience mental health today. It suits older children, teenagers and adults with an interest in local or social history more than very young children, and the museum warns that some objects and themes can be upsetting. Schools and groups can book learning sessions, and the museum runs as a small, appointment-led space rather than a busy attraction.
